Mount Elgon, located in Bugisu region of Uganda, is an extinct volcano on the border with Kenya. Variations in altitude, micro-climates and soils enable production of lots with different profiles. Coffee on Mount Elgon is hand-picked due to the small farm sizes, mountainous terrain and long harvesting seasons. Ugandan Arabica grows favourably in plentiful rainfall, partly volcanic soils and shade from banana trees.
More than 11,000 smallholder families take part in the Kyagalanyi Mount Elgon project which began operations in 2007. It consists of a value chain where home-processed parchments are purchased from farmer groups, and where washing stations buy red cherries from farmers and process them.
